What to do?

OK, I admit it. I stopped at a dumpster again. I was going to park my car and I saw this sitting right next to one in the alley. After much re-organizing of the seats in my car as well as some contortion work on my part, I got it into my car and then carried it home. I really like it, but I am still trying to decide how I want to use it. You see, this is what the top looks like.
There are two identical openings on each side of the table top. I have no idea what used to be there before. Originally, I thought it might have been a piece of glass, but I do not think so because it is not designed so that the view through the table is pleasing. You can see underneath which is not perfectly finished. So, what to do? I am not sure. I have posted the question on one of the flickr groups that deals with things salvaged from the trash, but I have not received any input. If and when I do, I will post it.

i don't know what was ocne there, but it would look sooo nice with a panel of caning. I have a table similar with side panels of caning. constantines.com has a nice selection. also, maybe even tiled panels? that seems appropriate for a table like this. either way, it is a nice find!! :)
