Grab your popcorn

I do not check the forums at Etsy as often as I should. When you are a seller you should really check in because there are often important messages from the administrators as well as useful information from other merchants. Usually, I am pretty lax. Lately, I have found that they can also serve as a great form of entertainment. Who needs reality TV when you can read the back and forth on some of the forum threads. Drama with a capital D. Sometimes I grab my popcorn and sit down to reading. Recently I have noticed that a lot of the drama comes from peeps here in Chicago. Imagine that. About a week ago there was this ranting seller who was accusing another seller of copying her "process". She believed that she had created a special third ingredient for an already long established process and that this other person had stolen it. Yes, she sounded as if she was a little cray-cray. It turned out that the process was nothing new and that there were hundreds of other artists selling the same type of stuff on Etsy. Oh yes, and she actually explained her process in the description of her items! She also had the nerve to change her item listings so that they included a jab at the work of the other shop owner declaring it sub-par. People started telling her she needed to back off. Girl, it got ugly. The accused showed up in the thread, but she was completely professional and courteous. Of course, the thread was closed by the admin when they finally caught on that the original post was a "calling out". I was hanging on to every comment until that time. Wait, it gets better. After the thread was closed, Cray-cray had the nerve to start another one with the same topic and this time including some copies of e-mails. To make it worse she accused "the accused" of lying about the recent death of her mother which made the accused respond again because she was feeling attacked. The poor woman had been receiving e-mails from Cray-cray for awhile and then was accused of lying about the death of her mother. See? Popcorn time. I just looked at Cray-cray's shop profile and this is what she has written there (I did not correct typos) :
Recently I've ben harrassed abused, called every name in the book by a very select few people. On fact, some of these people even felt the need to write nasty things about me on ratemyteachers.org

I am severely hurt, but I kove to create, so I will continue to do so despite it all. If you do hear anything negative about my shop, rest assured, I'm just a good person with a few internet bullies. Oh! And their IP addresses can and will be traced. Just in case you are thinking about doing such a thing yourself.

OK, Cray-cray.
So, let me get to the real reason for this post. I was trolling the forums again and came across a post about Urban Outfitters stealing designs from artists on Etsy as well as other venues. The comments were up to about 17 pages (I think) before it was closed. The story began with this Tumblr post here . It was then on the Huffington post here . It then got crazy and went viral which you can see with the power of the tweet here. So, I pop me up some new corn and I have a seat to read all of the comments on Etsy. I will condense a lot of it by telling you that most of the comments were foul language and hatred aimed at Urban Outfitters and full support of Tru.che. Until...someone raised an interesting point. There were many artists who had created and sold very similar designs before her and yet, she was getting all of the publicity and support. What about those before her that were not featured in the article, but had the same item before she sold hers? What do you think? Should it have been researched a little better by those that wrote the articles or it is just her bonanza for being the squeaky wheel? I saved the best for last. As of two days after the article ran, she had received over $50,000.00 in orders. I have no idea how much that has gone up since I last looked. Urban Outfitters had pulled the item from their website and according to the rumor mill over at the Etsy forum, staff had been notified to also pull the item from the shelves.

New shop

You may notice a new button on the sidebar. I was waiting until I received the new graphics, but I thought I should just launch and announce instead of waiting around twiddling my thumbs. I decided to open a second shop that deals solely with things for your house. Pupule was getting too confusing with the mix of clothing, accessories, and housewares. I now have the vintage fashion in Pupule and the vintage housewares over at Nalo. Nalo is Hawaiian for housefly. I am constantly adding new merchandise. I hope you will check it out.

First Run

Here are some examples of my first try printing on the letterpress with wood type.

I am pretty happy with the results.
The ampersands I purchased definitely show a lot of the life that they have lived. You can notice the nicks and imperfections. I really like that about wood type, but I think that is a matter of taste.

A Little Experiment

I recently saw this image over at The Sartorialist. I fell in love with the sleeveless trench vest that this woman is wearing. There were a lot of comments about this outfit. Some thought that a sleeveless coat was impractical. Others just did not like the look of anything sleeveless. I disagree.

So, I have decided to grab some scissors and my sewing machine for a little experiment. Fear not. It will only be a $6 experiment if it happens to go wrong.

Front Page

I have a handpicked item on the front page of Etsy today. This lovely vintage mod chrome lamp. (I was wondering why there were so many views) The items were handpicked for Father's Day. This is my first time on the front page. I know, it does not take much to excite me.

Giveaway

Lately, I have been working on some recycled applique t-shirts like the one above. I will be adding them to my Etsy shop very soon. Since I could not decide on what to offer for a giveaway corresponding with my 200th post, I am leaving it up to the winner. I will custom make a recycled applique t-shirt for the winner. All you need to do is leave a comment to this post within a week. I will randomly pick the winner. Good luck!

Bag progress

I finally finished a few of the bags an added them to the shop. I have not finished the shoulder bags yet. I still need to finish sewing the linings and making the shoulder straps.
These are some upcycled vintage mini luggage bags. When I spotted them at the thrift with their tartan plaid i was instantly taken back to the land of punk.

The cool thing about this one is that it has hard structured sides that fold down so that it completely collapses to about a three inch width.

My sister had sent me bunches and bunches of these skull suspenders (her workplace was throwing them out). So, I made key fobs out of them and attached them to the zipper pulls.

Can a bag be sexy?

I finally stopped procrastinating and did a little updating to my Etsy shop. The big push will happen when I start to overhaul the Pupuleshop which is partially shuttered right now. At least I realized from my last post that I needed to stop procrastinating and get some things done.

I found this vintage tennis bag to sell in the shop.

Once I started shooting it, I realized that there is something sexy about it.

The curve of the lines, the contrast in the piping. OK, you can just call me crazy.

Weekend projects

This weekend we received a large system of chilly air from our neighbors to the north. This was good because it actually made me stay inside and do some of the millions of things I have been putting off.
I cannot remember when I purchased these window coverings from Ikea, but it was awhile ago. I have these doors which lead to the second bedroom that I use as my office/workroom. I realized that when it does finally get used as a guest bedroom, the visitor might not appreciate the fact that you can see through these curtains. I also realized that I could camouflage the incredible pile of supplies and junk I have thrown in this room.

I found that these window shades were the perfect width for these windows. I just needed to sew them to slip onto the curtain rods. I finally sewed and installed them this weekend. I like the pop of color they add. (Everything in my house is pretty neutral)

I partially finished the ornaments I am using in the ornament exchange this year. I just have to add the finishing touches. I might also work up a second ornament as well.
I also started getting things ready for a re-stock of my Etsy store. I have almost everything shot. I just need to upload and enter all of the info. I need to stop procrastinating. Was anyone else out there productive this weekend?

A test

SO glad it is Friday. I feel like I could rest my head on my keyboard. Today I decided to try an experiment and add some of my vintage inventory to my etsy shop. I need to increase the traffic at the shop so I wanted to see if it is better on etsy and if that will trickle over to Pupule.

Etsy shop update

Well, I have actually been busy creating away due to all of this inclement weather we have been having of late. There are many new items in my Etsy shop as well as a few updated items. I seem to have hit a small addiction to the Boston Terrier for now. Being the owner of a Lab, I have no idea where this came from. I really need to get the Pupule Shop updated once again. I have a huge inventory that needs to get up for sale.

I also made my first try at creatine an iPod cozy. Since I did not have the actual iPod on hand, I am not sure that it will fit the actual iPod. I have a different model than the one that this is designed for. I should find out t his week whether or not my attempt was a success when I give it to its recipient.

Shop Update

New stuff added to my Etsy Shop
I feel like I have been procrastinating when it comes to updating my Etsy shop. I have been working in spurts on new merch, but instead of immediately adding it to my shop I tend to leave it and then upload it all at once. I think the blast of snow and windchill have motivated me to get it done.
